The Port Elizabeth Riding Club are very proud to be hosting a qualifier for the prestigious FEI World Cup Championship from the 14^th – 17^th July 2011.

This competition will have 4 classes ranging from 1m to 1:50m per day. The 1.50m class is where the top equestrian athletes from around our country will be competing.

Brighton Lodge has very generously sponsored a room for this event which will be given to one of the riders. 7’s Rugby

The HSBC 7’s World Series rugby will be played in Port Elizabeth for the first time in December this year. Port Elizabeth will host the SA leg of the series at the magnificent Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Tri-Nations Rugby in Port Elizabeth

The tri-nations rugby contest between South Africa, New Zealand and Australia kicks off on 23 July 2011 when South Africa (the Springboks) play Australia (the Wallabies) in Sydney. Arguably the most important game of the series will be played in Port Elizabeth on 20 August 2011 when the Springboks meet New Zealand (the All Blacks). This could be a vitally important game for both sides in the light of the rugby World Cup which will be held the following month in New Zealand. Many people believe that the game in Port Elizabeth may be the forerunner of the World Cup Rugby final. New Zealand are currently ranked number one in the IRB rugby world rankings and South Africa are currently ranked number three and some rugby experts are of the opinion that these two teams will contest the final. Whoever wins in Port Elizabeth will go into the World Cup with a huge psychological advantage.

It has been 41 years since the All Blacks last played in Port Elizabeth and this time around they will be playing at the magnificent new Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium which recently hosted the World Cup’s football games. It will be the first time that tri-nations rugby has been played in Port Elizabeth.

Port Elizabeth horserider Michelle Glover won the South African junior individual dressage championship on her horse Font Lyndon during December. The event was held at the Port Elizabeth Riding Club and attracted a strong field from all over the country. Michelle beat the country’s top junior riders and horses to win gold. Well done Michelle!

IN THE SWIM

Kyle Main, one of Port Elizabeth’s best known long distance swimmers, will soon be attempting a 30 kilometre swim which will end at Hobie Beach opposite Brighton Lodge. Kyle will be swimming from Sardinia Bay to Hobie Beach. This swim is part of Kyle’s training program for his forthcoming attempt to be the fastest African across the English Channel. Kyle’s channel swim takes place in September this year and he is aiming at a time of between 8 and 8½ hours. Good luck Kyle!

SA vs INDIA ODI CRICKET

Port Elizabeth will be hosting the 4^th ODI cricket match between South Africa and India on Friday 21 January 2011. The game will be played at the St Georges Cricket Ground in Park Drive which is only a few kilometres and less than 10 minutes drive from Brighton Lodge. 2011 Port Elizabeth Spec-savers Iron

The 7^th edition of the Specsavers Iron Man South Africa will take place in Port Elizabeth on 12 April 2011. In 2005 Port Elizabeth hosted its first (full distance) Iron Man event. Since then the “Friendly City” has become one of the most popular venues amongst competitors. The event is held early in April which is still pretty much summer time in South Africa but easing gently into autumn so the weather is generally mild and warm with temperatures around the mid 20′s (Celsius) (although the 2009 event was a scorcher with temperatures topping 30°C). The warm currents of the Indian Ocean normally provide comfortable water temperatures for the swimming leg. Most of the cycling leg takes place outside of the built up areas and a large section of the route comprises gently undulating country roads and a magnificent stretch along a spectacular shoreline. The people of Port Elizabeth really get involved in the race and line the beach front for many kilometres on race day to cheer and encourage the competitors.

The Port Elizabeth Iron Man event always provides exciting racing. Local resident Reynard Tissink won in 2010 to add to his 2005 victory. Reynard put Port Elizabeth on the Iron Man World Championship map again recently with an incredible 5^th place finish at the 2010 Iron Man World Champs in Khona earlier this month. The 2011 Port Elizabeth event is sure to provide more exciting racing.
